Entrepreneurial Livestock Consultancy for Cattle Theft Prevention and Recovery in South Africa’s North-West Province

In African history, cattle were at the heart of economies to a point where they became currencies till to this date, especially where traditional trade and transactions are involved. As a result, cattle theft poses a persistent socioeconomic and security threat in the North-West Province of South Africa, particularly along its permeable borders with Botswana and Namibia. This paper develops an entrepreneurial framework for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) focused on livestock consultancy services specializing in theft prevention, monitoring, and recovery. The initiative is grounded in the intersection of agricultural entrepreneurship, technology adoption, and cross-border security collaboration. Two complementary pricing models are proposed: an insurance model for available cattle and a recovery model for uninsured stolen cattle. Each pricing model accounts for border complexity, livestock market value, and geographic vulnerability. The initiative emphasizes the potential for sustainable SME development, cross-border economic integration, and improved livestock traceability within the Southern African region.
