Abstract

Corporate governance continues to be an important contributor towards the success of companies in the developing countries. This study sought to examine the influence of corporate governance on performance of agricultural firms in Zimbabwe so as to improve their performance. Specifically, the study aimed to assess corporate governance’s influence on return on equity and return on assets of Listed agricultural firms from 2013-2022. Panel data for five agricultural firms for the period 2013 – 2022 was collected. The data included board size, number of non-executive directors, board independence, board committees, Chief executive officer duality, return on assets and return on equity. Stata 18 was employed to regress the data. Correlation analysis using the zero-order pairwise was chosen as the main tool of analysis in the research to find the relationship between corporate governance and performance. The research concluded that when financial performance is proxied by return on assets the study indicates that board size has a negative effect on performance. This is contrary when financial performance is measured using return on equity. It was established that as the number of board committees increases, the lower the performance. Firm assets, firm leverage and firm age positively influences financial performance of agricultural firms in Zimbabwe. This study recommends that companies should implement corporate governance measures to promote firm performance. More specifically, it is recommended that board size, number of non-executive directors and number of board committess be managed to enhance financial performance.
