Abstract
Corporate governance continues to be an essential element towards the success of companies worldwide. This literature review sought to examine recent studies on the relationship between corporate governance and firm performance with the aim of identifying gaps and potential research design issues for future research. In undertaking this review paper, relevant articles published between 2020 and 2024 were selected using Google Scholar, ResearchGate, and Inderscience Publishers. The initial phase in evaluating empirical research papers involved examining factors associated with corporate governance (CG) and firm performance (FP). The subsequent phase involved analyzing research papers by screening pertinent studies, concentrating on findings associated with corporate governance and firm performance, to discern prospective research papers. The selection of 50 articles for this literature review was based on the use of keywords. Future research needs to focus on comparisons between different economies and different sectors of production. Future research should examine emerging trends such as artificial intelligence and digital governance in relation to the impact of corporate governance on firm performance. Future research is expected to aid regulators, company executives, and investors in enhancing corporate governance standards and firm performance.
