Abstract

Against the background of a work environment increasingly characterized by volatility, uncertainty, complexity, and ambiguity (VUCA), the question of appropriate HR development measures arises. One possible answer is provided by the Working Out Loud (WOL) method developed by John Stepper. In a self-directed development process, the method focuses on transparency, generosity, and relationship building. The goal is to create a supportive network that helps individuals reach personal or professional objectives. This article introduces the WOL method as an HR development measure, discusses the potential of the method, describes its implementation and outlines key challenges as well as benefits for employees and organizations: WOL represents an appropriate method to successfully develop employees in a VUCA working environment. As a suggestion for further research, the article recommends a quantitative study to empirically determine the effects of WOL.
