This study conducts a bibliometric analysis to determine the state of the art in the field of board-ownership dynamics and wealth maximization research over time, the scientific mappings, the trends and critical themes. We analyze 241 articles from 109 journals from the Scopus database spanning 2008 to 2024. Performance, scientific mapping, and factorial analyses reveal significant growth, authors’ contributions, and current trends to be explored in future studies. The keyword analysis shows that researchers focus on corporate governance and ownership structure, focusing less on-board characteristics, CSR and environmental management. Our findings suggest four research streams: (1) corporate governance, CSR, institutional ownership and firm performance; (2) board dynamics, managerial and institutional ownership; (3) ownership structure, CEO narcissism, and carbon emissions; and (4) earnings management, environmental disclosures, and ESG. Corporate boards should critically consider the interplay between board attributes and ownership structure as pivotal for their firms, address agency and stewardship concerns, and highlight the critical importance of effective governance mechanisms.
