Abstract

Human capital has become a central driver of organizational performance and competitiveness in the modern business environment, particularly within the private sector where firms rely heavily on skilled and adaptable employees to sustain growth and innovation (Popoola, 2014; Njoku & Onyegbula, 2017). Consequently, strategic investment in employee development has emerged as a critical organizational priority. This study investigates the relationship between human capital development and employees’ career development in the private sector, using Nestle Nigeria Plc as a case study. Employing a descriptive survey design, data were collected from 300 employees using structured questionnaires and analyzed through descriptive and inferential statistics, including Pearson correlation and regression analyses. Findings reveal that human capital development, coaching, managerial support, and skill acquisition significantly enhance employees’ career progression. The study emphasizes that strategic investment in employee development contributes not only to individual growth but also to organizational competitiveness and sustainability. Policy implications suggest the need for structured training programs, mentorship initiatives, supportive leadership, and continuous skill development to foster career advancement and optimize organizational performance. These findings provide critical insights for private sector organizations aiming to align human capital strategies with long-term business objectives.
