Abstract

This paper aims to contribute to the strengthening of institutional support for renewable energy adoption, decentralized mini-grid promotion, and rural electrification in Nigeria. To achieve this, the study acknowledges the policies and institutional architecture that underpin the Nigerian energy sector administration and elucidates the pivotal role of public-private partnerships (PPPs) in catalyzing the adoption of renewable energy sources in Nigeria, with a focus on mini-grid systems designed for rural electrification. Despite Nigeria's status as Africa's most populous nation, a substantial portion of its population lacks reliable electricity access, necessitating innovative solutions to bridge the energy gap. This study posits PPPs as a practical framework for fostering collaboration between governmental bodies and private sector stakeholders, thus optimizing resource allocation and enhancing risk management. A mixture of quantitative and qualitative secondary data synthesis was employed to appreciate the role of public-private partnerships (PPPs) in renewable energy adoption. The findings reveal that mini-grids not only ameliorate energy access but also stimulate local economic development by fostering entrepreneurship, job creation, and advancements in education and healthcare services. Additionally, the research examines the viability of mini-grid projects and highlights the successful mobilization of investment through PPP frameworks. The socio-economic ramifications are also addressed, underscoring how increased access to energy contributes to poverty alleviation and sustainable community development. This study ultimately underscores the transformative potential of PPPs in advancing renewable energy initiatives and proposes actionable policy recommendations for stakeholders to optimize mini-grid deployment.
