This study investigates business incubation support services provided to small, medium, and micro enterprises (SMMEs) in Tshwane Municipality townships and their contribution to business growth. Despite significant public investment in business incubation in South Africa, with over R677 million allocated to 110 incubators in the past five years, the effectiveness of these services in promoting sustainable township business growth remains unclear. The study adopted a qualitative, interpretivist approach using an exploratory research design. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews with 20 SMME owners and managers from the retail and services sectors registered with the Small Enterprise Development and Finance Agency in Gauteng. Thematic analysis revealed that incubators provide training, coaching and mentoring, infrastructure, financing, and networking opportunities that support SMME growth. These services enhance operational and strategic skills, provide guidance and market access, reduce operational costs, improve investor readiness, and facilitate market expansion. However, business growth is hindered by managerial capacity gaps, administrative barriers, financial constraints, environmental adaptation challenges, and limited post-incubation market access. The study recommends integrating support services, strengthening post-incubation systems, simplifying regulatory requirements, and adoption of hybrid models combining incubation and acceleration elements to improve SMME sustainability and growth.
