Employee motivation plays an important role in improving public sector performance and supporting socially sustainable service delivery in South Africa. Social sustainability depends on public institutions providing fair, reliable, and quality services that improve people's well-being and strengthen public trust. Despite policies such as the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa (1996), the Public Service Act, and the Batho Pele Principles, many public institutions continue to face challenges such as poor performance, low employee morale, inefficiency, and service delivery failures. This article examines the relationship between employee motivation, organisational performance, service delivery, and social sustainability in South African public institutions. The article uses a qualitative narrative review of existing literature, policy documents, and empirical studies on employee motivation in the public sector. The findings show that fair pay, job security, recognition, career development opportunities, supportive leadership, and good working conditions improve employee motivation and organisational performance. The article further finds that motivated employees contribute to better service delivery, higher productivity, improved accountability, and increased public trust, which are important elements of social sustainability. In contrast, low employee motivation contributes to absenteeism, staff turnover, poor performance, and declining service quality. The article recommends strengthening human resource management practices, employee development initiatives, and supportive leadership to improve employee motivation, enhance public sector performance, and promote socially sustainable service delivery in South Africa.
